Most people would be surprised to hear that more asphalt is recycled each year than the combined amount of aluminum, glass, plastic bottles, and newspapers.
Every year in the US, close to 90 million tons of asphalt are recycled and used in either new paving projects or to make aggregate bases for other construction projects. Recycling used asphalt saves more than 3 billion dollars each year, keeps millions of cubic yards of reuseable waste from taking up space in landfills, and results in emission decreases equivalent to taking more than half a million cars of the road. |
The Good News about Asphalt Plant EmissionsAsphalt Material Plants (AMPs) play a vital role in the maintenance of our nation’s infrastructure and strive to be good neighbors in the communities they serve.
AMPs employ multiple emission control systems, in accordance with local/national regulations, which may include monitoring to ensure compliance with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) at the property boundary. The small amount of emissions released from these control systems is closely monitored to make certain emissions stay well below any permitted level set by regulators, and to ensure they pose no health or environmental risk to nearby communities. |
